CNN Calls Curtis Sliwa “A Wacky Local Character” — Reports Cuomo’s Team Saying “A Vote For Sliwa Is A Vote For Mamdani”

CNN just ran an article about the New York City mayoral race — and, true to form, they treated it like a two-man contest between Andrew Cuomo and Zohran Mamdani.

Yes, CNN mentions Curtis Sliwa — but not as a serious contender. Instead, the network describes him as “the wacky local character he’s spent a lifetime being” — essentially dismissing him as a colorful sideshow rather than a legitimate candidate — and gives prominent space to Cuomo’s campaign aides, who are pushing the message that “a vote for Sliwa is a vote for Mamdani.”

CNN wrote:

“That isn’t the usual formula for a winning campaign. But this remains a strange race, with all the New Yorkers who don’t like Cuomo personally or politically overlapping at times with all the New Yorkers who can’t stomach Zohran Mamdani’s proud democratic socialism and opposition to Zionism, as well as all the New Yorkers struggling to see GOP nominee Curtis Sliwa as anything other than the wacky local character he’s spent a lifetime being.”— CNN, October 16, 2025

And later in the same piece, CNN lets everyone know that Cuomo’s aides want voters to believe that supporting the Republican helps Mamdani win:

“Aides are trying to get that to come out of him more succinctly: ‘A vote for Sliwa is a vote for Mamdani.’

Aides will be working the line into as much of what the campaign puts out in the final weeks as they can.”

But that’s not true. A vote for Curtis Sliwa is a vote for public safety, accountability, and leadership that puts New Yorkers first — not socialism, not corruption, and not Cuomo’s political comeback.

Even the headline and photo tell the story: CNN’s piece is titled “Ahead of NYC mayor’s race debate, Cuomo hopes for a chance while Mamdani hopes for a mandate,” paired with a photo of Cuomo and Mamdani — not Sliwa.

As CNN itself notes, Cuomo aims to elbow out Sliwa — and the network’s coverage helps him do it.

Curtis Sliwa has spent decades fighting for safer streets and holding city leadership accountable in New York City — long before most of today’s politicians even showed up. Yet CNN treats him like a joke, not a serious candidate, simply because he’s a Republican.

He’s promised to crack down on crime, end open drug use, clean up homeless encampments, and reclaim the subways and sidewalks for New Yorkers. While others make speeches, Sliwa actually walks those same streets — and he’s seen what needs to change.

Sliwa is the only candidate speaking for real New Yorkers who are tired of chaos and soft-on-crime policies — and who want a city that’s safe, functional, and led by people who actually care about New Yorkers.

Rudy Giuliani endorsed Curtis Sliwa for mayor of New York City.
