Rachel Maddow On MS NOW: Trump Is Threatening To Execute & Kill Reporters

On The Rachel Maddow Show on March 16, 2026, Rachel Maddow claimed:

“Meanwhile, this is the most unpopular war in modern American history. The president is trying to manage that by today, threatening to execute, threatening to kill reporters who don’t report on the war the way he wants them to. That’ll fix it. That’ll fix it. Maybe he’ll take a page from Putin and tell us we’re no longer allowed to call it a war. We’ll have to start calling it an excursion like he does. Or, or we’ll all go to jail, or he’ll kill us all. Sure, that’ll do it.”

But Trump’s March 15 Truth Social post does not threaten to execute or kill reporters. It criticizes media outlets for spreading false information, Iranian propaganda, and AI-generated fakes tied to Iran, and says those outlets should face treason charges and FCC license review.

Under federal law (18 U.S.C. § 2381), treason is punishable by death, or by at least five years in prison, a fine of at least $10,000, and disqualification from holding federal office. But any punishment would be decided by a court after conviction.

Treason prosecutions are extremely rare in American history, and even in modern propaganda-related treason cases, the result has been prison rather than death. The Constitution’s narrow definition of treason and its strict proof requirements make Maddow’s characterization far more extreme than the text of Trump’s post.

The First Amendment protects speech and the press, and the strict constitutional requirements for treason—levying war against the U.S. or aiding enemies, with overt acts witnessed by two people or a confession in open court—make death penalties for reporting or disinformation highly implausible in practice.

Maddow didn’t even read his post to her audience. She just claimed he was threatening to execute and kill reporters.

Leave it to Rachel Maddow to spin a warning about media spreading Iranian AI fakes into imaginary death threats—classic fearmongering from the very “Fake News” outlets Trump called out.
