Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) complained about federal agents showing up at her home at 6 a.m., suggesting they deliberately chose that hour to frighten her and her family.
During an October 21 interview with Chris Hayes on MS NOW’s All In, Omar described the October 12 search of her Washington, D.C., home by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents.
She said:
“You don’t show up to somebody’s house that early in the morning unless you’re trying to freak them out.”
Omar said she had returned from traveling late the previous night and had gotten only about two and a half hours of sleep when agents began pounding on her front and back doors.
She described the scene:
“We were screaming, we’re coming down!”
She said her family was upstairs trying to get dressed and get downstairs before agents broke down the door.
Apparently, Omar thinks federal agents executing a search warrant should arrange their arrival around her travel and sleep schedule.
When Hayes asked whether the agents identified themselves, Omar said they were shouting something, but she couldn’t understand them from upstairs.
She claimed she initially thought something was on fire or that an emergency evacuation was underway.
Omar described recognizing the HSI markings on the agents’ clothing.
Despite acknowledging that she knew what HSI investigates, Omar acted completely bewildered about why agents would be at her home.
She told Hayes:
“I could see that their vests said HSI, which I’m familiar with. Um, so I figured that they were there for a purpose, and so I did ask if they had a search warrant.”
When Hayes asked whether recognizing HSI made her realize why they were there, Omar responded:
“No.”
She continued:
“Because that’s immigration, that’s trafficking, um, that’s, you know, uh, drugs.”
Omar then questioned why agents would be at her house at that hour:
“The fact that they were at my house that early in the morning, you know, so, so bizarre, so I, you know, I was like, why, why are you here?”
So Omar recognized Homeland Security Investigations, knew the types of crimes the agency investigates, and was handed a search warrant. Yet she still acted as though she couldn’t imagine why federal agents would be at her door.
And somehow, the 6 a.m. arrival was what she found so suspicious.
Does Omar really expect anyone to believe she has no idea why federal investigators would be interested in her?
