On June 4, President Biden issued a presidential proclamation on border security to counter the crisis that his own administration has created at our borders. The action marks a significant reversal of the President’s political posture. After his policies launched a historic wave of illegal immigration at our southern border, President Biden initially denied that there was any border crisis. Then he claimed that he lacked any authority to secure our borders and enforce our immigration laws. Now, the President has finally acted and through this order, but unfortunately it is riddled with loopholes and falls far short of the real policy changes needed to stop the border crisis.
The proclamation, which was accompanied by a regulation issued by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Department of Justice (DOJ), is modeled after the Senate’s failed border bill. Its stated goal is to create an expulsion authority to prevent mass illegal immigration.
