Federal Judges Prevent Donald Trump From Ending Birthright Citizenship For Children Of Illegal Aliens

Birthright citizenship in the 14th Amendment was originally meant for freed slaves, not illegal aliens. It was passed in 1868, after the Civil War, to ensure that formerly enslaved people and their children were recognized as U.S. citizens.

It was never intended to grant automatic citizenship to the children of people who entered the country illegally or temporarily. That’s why many call it a loophole—a constitutional protection meant for slaves is now being used to reward illegal immigration. Trump tried to fix it. Activist judges shut it down.
