On May 3, 2025, Logan Federico, a 22-year-old college student from Waxhaw, North Carolina, was fatally shot in her sleep during a random home invasion in Columbia, South Carolina. The suspect, Alexander Dickey, a 30-year-old with over 40 prior charges, allegedly broke into multiple homes, stole a firearm, credit cards, and a vehicle, and killed Federico before fleeing. Dickey was arrested on May 4 and faces charges including murder, burglary, and grand larceny.
A Google search for Logan Federico’s case reveals limited mainstream and national media coverage. Attached images show a People article on page two and a Daily Mail story on page four, while New York Post and Western Journal articles don’t rank in the top four pages. Yahoo, ABC, and MSN published stories, but these also lack prominence. Searches on the websites of CNN, MSNBC, PBS, NBC, CBS, The New York Times, and The Washington Post yielded no stories about the incident. Local news outlets in South Carolina and North Carolina, such as WIS-TV, ABC Columbia, and WCCB Charlotte, have reported on the case. However, most mainstream news outlets opted not to cover it, and the few that did gave it minimal attention. This contrasts sharply with the extensive coverage often seen when police kill a Black man on drugs resisting arrest.
If a White man had killed a Black woman in her sleep, mainstream media would cover it extensively, dominating news cycles for weeks. The absence of national coverage for Logan Federico’s death—a White woman killed in her sleep by a Black man with an extensive criminal record—is selective reporting by major news organizations. No one in the national media made a big deal about this story.
Can you imagine the mainstream media covering this story with the same intensity and relentless focus as they did the George Floyd case?
