The Media Claims Gas Is Up Almost 40% — Reality Says It’s Actually Lower Than When Biden Left Office

In an MRC video titled Networks Go to the Mat Against Trump Following Economic Speech (Pt. 1), a host on NBC’s Today claimed that “electricity and gas [are] up almost 40%.” But that’s simply not true — especially when it comes to gas.

If you look at the bottom left of the video, it clearly shows the date: Wednesday, December 10, 2025.

On the day Biden left office, the national average was about $3.12 per gallon. During his presidency, prices soared as high as $5.07.

Yet just a few days ago, I saw gas for $2.50.

Here’s the math:

$3.12 – $2.50 = $0.62 cheaper
$0.62 ÷ $3.12 ≈ 20% lower
👉 Gas is actually 20% LOWER today than when Biden left office.

Now compare today’s price to Biden’s peak:
$5.07 – $2.50 = $2.57 cheaper

That’s roughly 50% lower than the highest gas price under Biden.

So not only is gas not up 40% — it has fallen dramatically.

What about electricity?

Yes, electricity prices have risen in recent years. But not by 40% nationwide, and certainly not in the short window the media implies. Most states have seen single-digit to modest double-digit increases spread over several years — nowhere near the sensationalized “40%” claim.

In other words: the number is exaggerated, and the framing is misleading.

When you look at actual reality, the picture is clear:

⛽ Gas prices are down — not up.
📉 They’re 20% lower than Biden’s exit price.
📉 Nearly 50% lower than his peak.
📉 And nowhere close to the “40% spike” the media keeps repeating.
⚡ Electricity has risen — but nowhere near 40%, and certainly not in the timeframe the media implies.
