Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal has a shortcut for figuring out what Americans think: ask Congress.
Speaking with Dana Bash on CNN’s The Source with Kaitlan Collins on October 19, the Connecticut Democrat cited an 86–11 Senate vote on Russia sanctions, then declared: “The American people are with Ukraine.” He accused President Trump of contradicting Americans’ wishes.
Well, that settles it. Washington politicians voted, so the American public has spoken.
The August 7 vote backed sanctions targeting Russia and major buyers of its oil and gas. Trump later put those sanctions on hold while pursuing a deal to buy Russian diesel. Blumenthal wants them enforced, even as he blames Trump for high fuel prices. He and other supporters in Congress want to pressure Russia while continuing to fund Ukraine—and expect Americans to accept that Washington’s priorities are their priorities.
Congress is not the American people. Voting for a candidate does not mean approving every vote that lawmaker casts.
It’s the same routine on the fake news: bring on Democrats to blame Trump, let them claim they speak for the American people, treat their words as established facts, and leave those claims unchallenged.
