Maddow: Trump Sent People To Prison In El Salvador With No Criminal Record Whatsoever, Could Be US Citizens

Rachel Maddow’s claim about Trump shipping people to El Salvador “with zero processing at all” is her opinion. Being in the U.S. illegally is a crime, and deporting violators doesn’t require a criminal record beyond that. U.S. citizens would’ve shown ID and stayed—citizens have a clear way to prove status and avoid this fate. Her opinion that “we don’t even know if any of them are, I don’t know, US citizens” is speculative and lacks evidence. Due process exists, and El Salvador’s deal was for deportees and criminal illegal immigrants.

But nevertheless they’re in prison now indefinitely, in a foreign country. And we’re not even allowed to know their names. We’re not even allowed to know if any of them are, I don’t know, US citizens. There’s a lot going on. Um, and a lot of it is very hard fought and full of drama. But as much as we are watching all of those stories those kinds of stories every day, we are also trying to keep our eyes on the sort of shadow stories in the boring corners…
