Sen. Chris Murphy (D): “Hegseth Said Trump Has Latitude To Carry Out Conflict With No End”

Before this clip, Kaitlan Collins aired short, selective clips from Pete Hegseth and Trump—cutting them off, removing context, and stitching them together so viewers had no clear picture of the administration’s position on Iran.

Right before introducing Democrat Sen. Chris Murphy, this was exactly what she showed. This was the entire context viewers received:

From Hegseth’s March 2, 2026 Pentagon briefing:

Hegseth:

President Trump has all the latitude in the world to talk about how long it may or may not take.

Then a reporter asked:

Is there a concern of this spiraling into a longer war?

Hegseth replied:

Did you not hear my remarks.

Next, she cut to President Trump speaking about White House construction (discussing drapes, improvements, gold curtains, and renovations).

And right after that, Collins brought on Sen. Chris Murphy. Her first question was:

As we continue to monitor the latest out of the Middle East tonight, I wanna bring in the Democratic senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut, who is also a member of the Foreign Relations Committee. And senator, obviously, we’re tracking what is happening on the ground tonight. But in terms of overall, for people who are sitting at home and watching, and wondering what is happening here, is it clear to you based on what we’ve heard from the administration, why the United States is at war with Iran right now?

For people sitting at home and watching, wondering what is happening, they’re watching the wrong show and the wrong channel. CNN and their puppet Kaitlan Collins aren’t showing the truth—they’re stitching together short snippets about Iran while showing Trump’s renovation comments in full, to make it look like President Trump and Pete Hegseth have no goals or plan in Iran, and that this could turn into a forever war.

It’s ridiculous. Then she handed the mic to an anti-Trump Democrat to ask for his opinions.

Murphy’s response:

Of course, it’s not clear. I mean, this is incompetent and ham-handed leadership. They all have different reasons for attacking Iran. I guess what I think is that it’s just so disgusting to listen to the president of the United States be waxing and waning poetically about the drapes that he’s buying while there are six Americans who are dead. There are six American families who are about to bury their children because of a war of choice that no one in this country wanted, an illegal war. I mean, you also played this clip of Secretary Hegseth saying that the president has all the latitude he needs in order to carry out a conflict with no end. The disdain that these people have for the constitution, for the idea that it’s only the people that consent to war is just absolutely shocking. Uh, so we’ve heard no coherent explanation. We’ve heard no goals for what Iran supposed to look like at the end of this mission. And the region is spiraling out of control. American casualties are mounting. Billions of dollars in taxpayer money is being misspent. This is a growing crisis of incoherence and incompetence at the White House.

Murphy opens by saying it’s “not clear,” accuses the administration of having “different reasons,” and insists there’s no coherent explanation or goals. That’s spin. Operation Epic Fury is aimed at degrading Iran’s ability to threaten regional and international security. Its objectives include preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, destroying or disabling ballistic missile launch systems and production facilities, striking key naval and military infrastructure, and reducing the operational capacity of Iranian-backed proxy forces.

President Trump has a laser-focused strategy to decisively weaken Iran’s ability to threaten the U.S. or allies, without endless occupation. The goals and rationale for the operation have been publicly outlined in briefings and official statements. Don’t take anyone’s word for it—look them up yourself.

On the “drapes” point, Collins aired his full White House renovation moment (drapes/gold curtains/renovations) but she clipped his speech about Iran into four very short clips stitched together. The problem isn’t President Trump—who has been known to talk about other subjects to lighten the mood. The real issue is that Collins showed his full renovation segment while heavily editing his Iran comments..

When Murphy calls it a “war of choice” and “illegal” while citing the six American deaths, that’s propaganda. The deaths are tragic from Iranian retaliation, but they stem from Iran’s immediate escalation and long history of proxy attacks on U.S. forces. This is defensive action under the President’s Article II authority to counter ongoing threats, with Congress briefed (Gang of Eight pre-strikes, full updates after). Many Americans support confronting Iran’s terror sponsorship head-on rather than endless appeasement.

Murphy’s biggest twist is how he spun the “latitude” remark. Here’s what Murphy claimed based on the clipped segment Collins aired:

“I mean, you also played this clip of Secretary Hegseth saying that the president has all the latitude he needs in order to carry out a conflict with no end.

But Hegseth’s actual words were clearly about talking publicly about the timeline—not authorizing an endless war.

Hegseth said:

President Trump has all the latitude in the world to talk about how long it may or may not take.

That is a completely different claim. “Latitude… to talk about how long” is messaging flexibility (what the President can say publicly about timelines), not “latitude… to carry out a conflict with no end.” Murphy took a statement about communication and reframed it into a constitutional accusation to claim “disdain” for the Constitution.

Finally, his “region is spiraling” and “incompetence” conclusion doesn’t match reality. U.S. strikes hit over 1,700 targets in the first 72 hours (nearing 2,000 in 100 hours), devastating key capabilities and weakening Iran’s ability to project power. Casualties are tragic, but they underscore why action matters—and why paying the cost now prevents a far worse threat later.

Bottom line: this is Democrat propaganda amplified by CNN’s misleading edits to attack a President who’s finally hitting Iran hard and delivering results. Trump chose strength over endless appeasement—Operation Epic Fury is protecting America, blocking nukes, and reshaping the region for the better.

The media and left want confusion and weakness. Trump brings clarity and victory. Don’t let them twist the truth.

Democrats want President Trump to tell Iran exactly how long this operation will take.
