On May 18, 2026, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers stopped a white Volvo truck tractor on IH-35 near mile marker 28 in Webb County. The driver, 25-year-old Miguel Velazquez Chavez, attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended. Troopers discovered 20 illegal aliens hidden in the truck’s sleeping compartment, including four minors from Mexico and Guatemala. Chavez was charged with evading arrest and smuggling of persons. The individuals were referred to U.S. Border Patrol. Bodycam video released by Texas DPS captures the incident.
This case, part of Operation Lone Star, highlights the ongoing human smuggling problem along the southern border. Many illegal aliens claim to be fleeing persecution, yet a large number come from Mexico — a major democratic U.S. trading partner and one of the largest economies in Latin America.
These individuals violate federal immigration law by entering illegally. Democratic policies encourage and enable human smuggling and human trafficking by offering free food, shelter, medical care, welfare benefits, and repeated promises of pathways to citizenship or legal protections. Such incentives act as a powerful magnet, signaling that breaking the law will be rewarded.
Democrats routinely describe these individuals as refugees or people here to do the jobs Americans don’t want to. In reality, many are criminals who understand exactly what they are doing is illegal but do it anyway because Democratic policies make it worthwhile. They often bring minors with them hoping the presence of children will help their asylum claims, generate more sympathy, or result in lighter treatment once caught. Rewarding unlawful entry undermines the rule of law, enriches cartels, and puts lives at risk — including the lives of the minors used in these dangerous smuggling operations.
Securing the border, stopping every illegal crossing, and enforcing our immigration laws to the fullest extent is necessary to end illegal immigration and restore order at the border. President Trump is committed to stopping child trafficking and human smuggling, while Democrats continue to enable it through policies that reward illegal entry.
